Georg Ullmann

Milan and Zurich

Biography

Georg (Georgius) Ullmann was a violin maker active in the early twentieth century, documented working in both Milan and Zurich. Instruments bearing his label indicate production in Mediolani (Milan) in 1913 [1] and in Turicum (Zurich) in 1918 and 1919 [2][5], suggesting either a migration between these centers or concurrent workshop activity. The maker employed consistent branding marks—"G. U." or "Georges Ullman"—to the inside back of instruments [1][2]. His output demonstrates standardized proportions across documented examples, with back lengths clustering around 35.6–35.9 cm [1][2][4][5], consistent with professional workshop practice. One fragmentary label reference to Marcapoli di Bergamo (1866) [3] cannot be reliably attributed to this maker without additional evidence.
