Giuseppe Antonio Rocca

Biography

Giuseppe Antonio Rocca, known as Joseph Rocca, was a violin maker who worked in Turin (Taurini) and Genoa (Genua) during the mid-19th century. His extant labeled instruments date from 1846 to 1854, with the majority of documented examples produced in Turin [2][3][4][5]. In 1854, Rocca relocated to Genoa, where at least one labeled violin was produced that year [6]. His instruments typically feature one- or two-piece backs with lengths consistently ranging between 35.2 and 35.6 cm [1-7]. Rocca's labels uniformly include the Latin monogram 'IHS' and the phrase 'fecit' (made by) followed by the city and year of manufacture [2-6].
