Carlo Antonio Testore

ItalianMilan

Biography

Carlo Antonio Testore was a violin and cello maker active in Milan during the first half of the 18th century. He was the son of Carlo Giuseppe Testore, as indicated by labels on multiple instruments identifying him as "figlio" or "figlio maggiore" (eldest son) of Carlo Giuseppe [1][3][4]. He worked in the Contrada Larga (also referenced as Contrada larga al Segno dell'Aquila, or at the Sign of the Eagle) in Milan [1][3][4][5][6]. Testore's documented instrument production spans from at least 1723 to 1752, based on labeled examples [3][5]. His workshop produced both violins and cellos [3]. Some of his instruments feature scrolls attributed to other makers, including Ferdinando Alberti and members of the Rugeri family, suggesting collaborative workshop practices or the use of specialist scroll carvers [1][2].
