Jean-Baptiste Vuillaume was a violin and cello maker based in Paris who operated from at least two documented workshop addresses. His instruments bear labels identifying him as "Jean Baptiste Vuillaume à Paris" with addresses at rue Croix des Petits Champs [3][8] and 3, rue Demours-Ternes [1][2][5][6][7][9][10]. His violins and cellos are typically signed, dated, and branded internally on the back or upper back, and assigned serial numbers. Vuillaume created instruments spanning several decades, with dated examples ranging from 1840 to 1873 [4][7][10]. He is documented making commissioned instruments, including a violin made for A. Lvoff in 1840 [4]. Notably, Vuillaume created a series of at least four violins collectively known as the Evangelists quartet, each featuring original carved tailpieces and pegs depicting individual evangelists (St. Marc and St. Jean documented here) with inscriptions on the front below the bridge [1][2]. His work has been subject to institutional exhibition, as evidenced by a Sotheby's Exhibition of his work in London in October 2012 [8].
