He is identified on multiple instrument labels as "Elève de Lupot," indicating he trained under the established violin maker Lupot [1][2][3]. Bernardel established his workshop on Rue Croix des Petits Champs in Paris, with documented addresses at numbers 23, 21 & 23, and 27 between 1829 and 1861 [1][2][3][4][5][6][7][8]. Bernardelʼs instruments received recognition at major French industrial expositions. He obtained a Medal (Medaille de Bronze) at the 1834 Exposition [7] and later won both gold and silver medals (Médaille dʼOr et dʼArgent) at the Expositions of 1844 and 1849, as recorded on labels from instruments dated 1855 and 1861 [2][3]. He produced a wide range of stringed instruments, including violins, violas, and cellos, with documented construction spanning at least from 1829 to 1861. His violas and cellos typically measure approximately 75 centimeters in back length, while his violins measure approximately 36 centimeters [1][2][3][4][5][6][7][8].
